Cholesterol Measurements May Be Made Easier

(HealthDay News) -- Methods to gauge blood cholesterol to determine vascular disease risk can be simplified, researchers in England say.

Their method measures levels of either total or high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or "good" cholesterol) in the blood or apolipoproteins (proteins that help transport cholesterol), without the need to have patients fast and without regard to another form of blood fat called triglycerides.

"Expert opinion is divided" on which combination of measurements is ideal in gauging cardiovascular risk, explained John Danesh, of the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration Coordinating Centre at the University of Cambridge, and colleagues.

In order to examine the association between major blood fats and apolipoproteins and coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke, the researchers analyzed data on more than 300,000 people without initial vascular disease who took part in 68 long-term studies. Read more...

More Sex May Help Neurotic Newlyweds

(HealthDay News) -- Frequent sex can help neurotic newlyweds achieve the same level of marital bliss as other newlyweds, a new study finds.

People who are neurotic tend to have more difficulty with relationships and marriage because they are more prone to irritation, mood swings and worry, according to the study, recently published online in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science.

"High levels of neuroticism are more strongly associated with bad marital outcomes than any other personality factor," the University of Tennessee researchers wrote in a journal news release.

In this study, the researchers followed 72 newlyweds over their first four years of marriage. On average, the couples reported having sexual intercourse about once a week for the first six months of marriage and about three times a month by the fourth year of marriage. Read more...

Kidney Removal May Be Ill-Advised for Some Elderly

(HealthDay News) -- Removing a kidney does not seem to extend the life of elderly people with kidney cancer that has not spread, a new study finds.

Instead, it suggests, people with such cancer should undergo more conservative treatments that preserve the non-cancerous parts of their kidneys.

Kidney cancer cases have increased over the past 10 years, especially among older people, and doctors are trying to figure out the best way to treat what they call localized cancer in this age group.

In the new study, Dr. Steve Campbell of the Cleveland Clinic and his colleagues examined the medical records of 537 people who were at least 75 years old and had localized kidney tumors. Read more...

Fatalistic Attitudes May Keep Hispanic Women From Cancer Tests

(HealthDay News) -- Fatalism, a belief that life's events are predetermined, may be one reason why Hispanic women have some of the lowest cancer screening rates in the United States, new research suggests.

Hispanic women are much more likely than white women to believe that cancer is not preventable, and that death is inevitable in those diagnosed with cancer, the researchers found.

Karla Espinosa de los Monteros and Linda Gallo from San Diego State University reviewed 11 studies that examined the association between Hispanic women's fatalism and their screening rates for cervical, breast and colorectal cancers.

The women in the studies were asked to what extent they agreed or disagreed with statements such as "cancer is like a death sentence," "cancer is God's punishment," "illness is a matter of chance," "there is little that I can do to prevent cancer," and "it does not do any good to try to change the future because the future is in the hands of God."Read more...

Preparation Can Help Kids With Nut Allergies Travel Safely

(HealthDay News) -- Parents of children with nut allergies need to take special precautions if they're traveling during the holiday season, an expert warns.
"The best thing to do is plan ahead. Though you can't plan for everything, being prepared will help keep your child safe and limit your holiday stress," Dr. Sean Cahill, an associate professor of pediatrics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, said in a Loyola news release.
One of the most important things is to keep your child's hands -- and surfaces that your child touches -- as clean as possible, he said. An allergic reaction can occur when children touch a surface that's been exposed to nuts and then places their hand(s) in their mouth.
Cahill offered the following general travel tips:
• Packing snacks will ensure you have safe food for your child.
• Make sure you know how restaurant food is prepared. For example, some fast-food restaurants cook their food in peanut oil.
• In case of an emergency, have an EpiPen and antihistamine medications with you at all times. Read more...

How is Antibiotic Use Linked to Cancer?

Unwisely prescribing way too antibiotics for children with sore throats when they don't need them. You might think twice about asking for an antibiotic, however, if you knew it could also increase your child's risk of cancer.
Based on the rise of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer affecting the body's lymphatic system, various studies investigating links with drugs have come up empty, until researchers reviewed information from the Scandinavian Lymphoma Etiology study that compared the health of some 3,100 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients with a group of healthy people.
Seems children who were treated with antibiotics more than 10 times had a higher incidence of non Hodgkin's lymphoma, and all subtypes of the disease. And, not so surprisingly, heavy use of non-steroidal inflammatory drugs, better known as NSAIDs, were also blamed for increasing one's odds of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Read more...

Good Attitude Boosts Health As Much As Formal Education

(HealthDay News) -- Positive factors such as meaningful relationships with others and a sense of purpose can help reduce the negative health impacts of having less schooling, a new study suggests.

It is known that lack of education is a strong predictor of poor health and a relatively early death, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison pointed out. But their new study, published online Oct. 18 in the journal Health Psychology, found that peace of mind can reduce the risk.

"If you didn't go that far in your education, but you walk around feeling [good], you may not be more likely to suffer ill-health than people with a lot of schooling. Low educational attainment does not guarantee bad health consequences, or poor biological regulation," study co-author and psychology professor Carol Ryff said in a university news release. Exercise, vit E slows ageing

A combination of exercise and vitamin E may help slow the ageing process.
That power of that potent combination is detailed in a University of Florida (UF) study in the current issue of Biological Research for Nursing.

Slows the process of cell destruction
The study of 59 healthy men and women aged 60 to 75 found those who exercised regularly and took vitamin E supplements became healthier and greatly decreased their levels of a blood marker that signals destruction of certain cells.

This cell destruction is caused by unstable molecular fragments called free radicals. This process of cell destruction, called free radical-induced oxidative stress, contributes to ageing and disease.

Decrease in oxidative stress and blood pressure
The study also found people who didn't exercise, but took vitamin E, had large decreases in oxidative stress and blood pressure.Read more...

Prescription drug addicts hit up emergency rooms for their next fix

Prescription drug abuse is out of control across the nation. Powerful opiate painkillers like OxyContin (odycodone) and Vicodin (not allowed bitartrate and acetaminophen) are replacing street drugs as addicts' drugs of choice, and these substances are causing increasing amounts of accident-related injuries and deaths. And according to a recent ABC News piece, prescription drug addicts are now abusing emergency rooms to get their fix.

According to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of people who visit ERs to get narcotic pain medications for non-medical reasons more than doubled between 2004 and 2008. And physicians in the ER often have no qualms about handing out addictive drugs like Adderall because they typically have little time to verify whether or not patients are in legitimate need. Colon Cancer and Early Detection

iFOB Home Test Kits, Now Available From DrFuhrman.com
Early Detection
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States. It is also the most preventable cancer through early detection and proper diet. Colon cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected in its earliest (non-cancerous) stages. Non-cancerous polyps can be detected and easily removed via a colonoscopy many years before they might morph into cancer. Furthermore, the screening for colon cancer need not expose people to radiation or needless surgeries.
The latest tool in the fight against colon cancer is the highly sensitive, stool screening method called iFOB (immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood) tests. This new test can detect even a very tiny amount of blood leakage from adenomas polyps, villous adenomas, and dysplastic polyps, thus detecting lesions in the colon before they become cancer.
Medical studies reveal that traditional stool guaiac (hemocult) tests commonly performed by physicians are not sensitive enough to detect very small amounts of blood in the stool and, therefore, are no longer recommended. Colonoscopies are somewhat invasive and only indicated once every 10 years for people over 50. As a result, there are many missed opportunities for early detection and prevention. iFOB tests are sensitive to even minute amounts of blood in the stool and much more accurate than traditional tests. They are non-invasive, convenient and simple to do without dietary restrictions. Learn more. Read more...

Monarch butterflies use medicinal plants to treat diseases in their offspring

What happens when animals get sick in the wild -- do they just fight off disease by themselves? It seems they may actively treat themselves, and their sick offspring, with natural therapies. If that sounds like a far-fetched idea, listen up. Although few studies have been conducted on self-medication by animals, researchers from Emory University in Atlanta theorize the practice may be far more widespread than humans have realized. In fact, they've just discovered that monarch butterflies use medicinal plants to treat their offspring for disease.

"We have shown that some species of milkweed, the larva's food plants, can reduce parasite infection in the monarchs," Jaap de Roode, the evolutionary biologist who led the study just published in the journal Ecology Letters, said in a statement to the media. "And we have also found that infected female butterflies prefer to lay their eggs on plants that will make their offspring less sick, suggesting that monarchs have evolved the ability to medicate their offspring. We believe that our experiments provide the best evidence to date that animals use medication." Read more...

Impotence Drugs May Aid Brain Tumor Treatment

(HealthDay News) -- A drug already approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction may actually help boost the effectiveness of treatments for brain tumors tied to both lung and breast cancer, research shows.

The finding stems from an animal study that indicated that leading erectile dysfunction medications sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra) can enable the chemotherapy drug Herceptin to more easily penetrate the so-called blood-brain barrier that must be breached in order to successfully target cancer that has spread to the brain.

Although the blood-brain barrier is a naturally occurring mechanism designed to protect the brain from exposure to dangerous substances, in the case of cancer treatment it can significantly impede drug delivery, particularly of large-molecule drugs, such as Herceptin. However, erectile dysfunction drugs appear to increase the barrier's permeability. Read more...

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) recall leaves food consumers wondering: What is this stuff?

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP) is one of most common soy-based food "fillers" used to make literally thousands of processed food products. It's found in veggie burgers, gravy mixes, soups and many other grocery products. Last Thursday, one of the largest producers of HVP in the United States, Las Vegas-based Basic Food Flavors Inc., was the subject of an FDA consumer safety warning announcement. Salmonella had been found contaminating the company's HVP production equipment, the FDA said, and a nationwide recall was initiated.

Most Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein isn't purchased directly by consumers; it's used by food production companies as an ingredient in mainstream processed foods. So it shows up in thousands of grocery products -- and most consumers are not aware they're eating this ingredient. In fact, many consumers are, for the first time, asking, "What is HVP?" Protect yourself from Alzheimer's disease with cinnamon

Degenerative mental diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia continue to ravish the lives of millions around the world. And to make matters worse, the financial burden of caring for dementia patients now tops one percent of the entire world's gross domestic product (GDP). But there are ways to help prevent and treat serious mental decline, including simply eating lots of cinnamon.

Dr. Richard Anderson, a diabetes expert from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, discovered several years ago that cinnamon helps to stabilize blood sugar levels by improving the quality of insulin in the body. But more recently, he found that cinnamon also helps to stop the formation of Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S.

When eaten with food or taken in extract form, cinnamon helps block the formation of "tau filaments" that are associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease. In tests, cinnamon actually disassembled and eliminated these filaments from within cells, effectively reversing the effects of the disease. Read more...

Horrifying environmental impact of non-Gulf shrimp

Shrimp is the most popular seafood in the United States, with the average resident consuming 4.1 pounds per year. But this food comes at a serious cost for the planet and for human health, warns Jill Richardson, author of Recipe for America: Why Our Food System Is Broken and What We Can Do to Fix It.

"Unfortunately much of the shrimp we eat are a cocktail of chemicals, harvested at the expense of one of the world's productive ecosystems," Richardson writes on Alternet.org. "Worse, guidelines for finding some kind of 'sustainable shrimp' are so far nonexistent."

Like all seafood, shrimp are wild animals, and many are still caught in the wild. Nearly all shrimp fishing in the world, however, is performed with the highly destructive technique known as trawling: Fishermen attach weighted nets the size of football fields to their boats, then drag them along the ocean floor scooping up all life in their path. Rheumatoid arthritis

The earliest signs of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are tiny injuries to the synovial membrane and an increase in the number of synovial cells. At this point, long before symptoms are experienced, there is evidence of immune cell penetration into the synovial membrane. Over time, the immune response continues to gain momentum and inflict damage on the synovial membrane.

The exact mechanism of bone and cartilage destruction during RA is not completely understood. One theory suggests that the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) stimulate the production of enzymes that degrade cartilage and inhibit the production of new cartilage and also contribute to the local demineralization of bone by activating osteoclasts (cells that break down bone) (Kasper DL et al 2005). Hydrogen Peroxide Cures Disease

THE ANTIDOTE
Bioweapons, Health, and the Individual
by Doc Holliday
from the Laissez Faire City Times

Ever read one of those Internet articles on biowarfare? Have you seen the TV tabloid terror shows about government incompetence/malfeasance with the handling of biological agents of horrifyingly destructive power? Did you read the Hot Zone by Richard Preston or see his article in the New Yorker this week called "The Bioengineers"?

I have seen all of the above, and I'm shocked. I am shocked at the insanity of blindly believing "national interests" are at stake and governments should "do something" to protect "the people." I am repulsed by the stupidity of immediately turning to government for solutions to problems that are in fact a consequence of the world-wide growth in nation-state power over the individual during the last three centuries. Curcumin and black pepper combine to stop breast cancer tumor cells

Natural chemicals found in the spices turmeric and black pepper appear to stop the growth of breast tumors, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

Researchers applied a solution containing both curcumin, found in turmeric, and piperine, which makes black pepper spicy, to breast cancer cells in a laboratory, using concentrations 20 times higher than those found in the human diet. They found that the solution hampered the ability of stem cells to propagate but did not affect the differentiation of normal breast cells.

"This shows that these compounds are not toxic to normal breast tissue," lead author Madhuri Kakarala said.

Cancer stem cells are the cells in tumors that allow it to keep growing without limit. Current chemotherapy treatments are unable to affect stem cells, which is part of the reason that cancers can spread and recur even in those undergoing treatment. Read more...

Health benefits of gluten-free diet helped make it mainstream

A mere decade ago, most people likely had no idea what gluten even was. Today, the protein is widely known for causing digestive and other health problems in certain people that requires them to eat only gluten-free foods. And many otherwise healthy individuals are also going gluten-free because they believe it will improve their overall health.

Gluten is a glue-like composite found naturally in grains like wheat, rye and barley. It is what gives breads their fluffy texture, and is often used in other food preparations to make food thicker or more chewy. But gluten upsets the digestive function of some people, including those with Celiac disease, which is changing the consumer food market.

According to reports, less than one percent of the population actually suffers a severe immune reaction from gluten, and up to eight percent have mild-to-moderate insensitivity to it. But a far greater percentage of people are choosing to go gluten-free, a trend that has many analysts confused. Read more...

Grapefruit compound could treat diabetes, lower cholesterol

Big Pharma has been doggedly searching for drugs that target a group of nuclear receptor proteins in the human body known by the long title of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs, for short). The reason? PPARs regulate the expression of genes that are involved in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, among other functions -- so the theory is that if drugs could control PPARs, the medications would treat diabetes, high cholesterol and even maybe obesity.

But it turns out there's already a substance that could do all this. And it's not a side effect-laden chemical. It's a compound in grapefruit.

Bottom line: there's extremely sweet breaking news about a compound hidden in the tangy flavor of grapefruits that may treat diabetes naturally and also bring some of the benefits of low carb dieting to the body, too -- without dieting. Scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), have discovered that naringenin, an antioxidant derived from the bitter flavor of grapefruits and other citrus fruits, triggers the liver to break down fat. Low-Carb Diets Heavy on Meat May Raise Health Risks

(HealthDay News) -- A low-carbohydrate diet that derives fats and proteins from vegetable sources rather than meats is probably healthier, new research finds.

Comparing the two types of diets over two decades, researchers found that the low-carb, vegetable-based plan resulted in reduced rates of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer, and a lower rate of all-cause death overall.

"You can have the initial Atkins-type of low-carb diet, which is loaded with sausages, bacon, steaks, and you can have healthy versions of the low-carb diet with more vegetable- or plant-based protein and fat," said Dr. Frank B. Hu, senior author of a study in the Sept. 7 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

"We looked at these two versions of low-carb diets and found that the impact of the two are drastically different," Hu said.

"Those who follow the animal-based low-carb diet have an increased risk of total mortality and cancer mortality in particular," said Hu, a professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. Read more...

Scientists say salmonella helps immune system to destroy cancer cells

Scientists from Italy and the U.S. claim to have found a new therapeutic way to assist the body in defending against and killing cancer cells -- salmonella bacteria. Based on initial tests in mice and human cancer cells, the team observed that small doses of salmonella actually trigger the immune system to better find and hunt down cancer cells in order to kill them.

"We did experiments first in mice and then in cancer cells and immune cells from human patients, and found that the salmonella was doing exactly the same job," explained Maria Rescigno from the European Institute of Oncology in Milan.

The team explained that the type of salmonella they used was a special form that does not actually cause the disease to infect the body. On the contrary, the bacterial fragments seemed only to help increase immune system levels of connexin 43, the unique protein that assists cells in communicating with each other in order to defend against foreign invaders. Study shows fluoride may not help teeth at all

Fluoridation of public water supplies offers no meaningful health benefit, according to a new study comparing cavity rates in two different Ontario provinces.

"Fluoridation is no longer effective," said Hardy Limeback, head of the University of Toronto's preventive dentistry program. Considering all the dangerous effects of fluoride consumption, in fact, he concluded that fluoridation is "more harmful than beneficial."

Fluoridation, the addition of fluoride to public water supplies, has been popular in First World countries for more than six decades, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control classifies it as one of the greatest health breakthroughs of the 20th century. Fluoridation proponents claim that the mineral strengthens teeth, thereby cutting cavity rate by 20 to 40 percent. Read more...

Campaign Offers Easy Steps to Cutting Diabetes Risk

(HealthDay News) -- Experts at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) are launching a new national prevention program to help people lower their risk for obesity-linked type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

CheckUp America will educate Americans on curbing risk factors such as overweight/obesity, high blood glucose, high LDL ("bad") cholesterol, high triglycerides, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and physical inactivity.

The more of these risk factors a person has, the greater their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

A recent ADA survey found that one in five Americans age 40 and older consider important health-related lifestyle changes "too hard," which suggests that many don't realize that relatively easy changes can help reduce their risk for diabetes and heart disease.

"The alarming rise in conditions like obesity, high blood glucose, and high blood pressure in America demands greater efforts to educate both people and physicians about the risk factors for type 2 diabetes and heart disease," Dr. John Buse, president-elect, medicine and science, ADA, said in a prepared statement. Pool chemicals linked to disease

A recent study out of the University of Illinois (U of I) links pool disinfectant chemicals with diseases like asthma and bladder cancer. According to researchers, pool chemicals react with organic matter in the water to form various toxic bonds that can lead to serious health problems.

"All sources of water possess organic matter that comes from decaying leaves, microbes and other dead life forms. In addition to organic matter and disinfectants, pool waters contain sweat, hair, skin, urine, and consumer products such as cosmetics and sunscreens from swimmers," explained Michael Plewa, a professor of genetics at U of I.

Unlike drinking water, which is exposed to disinfectants once before reaching the public, pool water is exposed to a continuous stream of disinfectants that mix and match with various other chemicals and compounds to form an unknown number of potentially dangerous chemical bonds.

According to researchers, these bonds can cause gene mutation, birth defects, respiratory problems, accelerated aging and even cancer. Read more...

How Cranberries Protect Your Teeth From Cavities

About this time last year, I told you about cranberry juice being used to successfully treat tooth decay and cavities. The same researchers have returned with new information that describes how cranberries work to protect your teeth from damaging bacteria, not unlike a natural form of Teflon.

Scientists coated a synthetic material resembling tooth enamel with cranberry juice, then applied bacteria, plaque or glucan that causes cavities. After seven months of research, scientists found cranberry juice protected teeth about 80 percent of the time.

Thankfully, even the lead research warned against heading for the grocery store in search of cranberry juice for two important reasons:

The fructose added to most processed cranberry juice is the primary culprit of cavities and a huge contributor to disease.
The natural acidity of cranberries strips essential minerals from your teeth. Read more...

Raw Food--One of Your Keys to Outstanding Health

By Wes Petereson

A kitchen is nothing else than a chemical laboratory producing millions of completely new chemical substances that basically never existed in the wild and if, then very occasionally by accident. Cooking will randomly produce millions of different sugar and protein combinations commonly called Maillard molecules.

Throughout the biggest part of our evolutionary history, the one before processing, human beings have never ingested the amount of Maillard molecules we ingest today. The recent introduction of dairy products and grains has equally brought new chemical substances such as new proteins into the dietary spectrum of humans within a very short period of time.

Key Points Regarding the Effects of Cooking on Food and Health

The food's life force is greatly depleted or destroyed when it is cooked. The bioelectrical energy field is altered and greatly depleted, as is graphically demonstrated with kirlian photography. Live and bioactive raw food is severely diminished. Read more...

High Protein Diets may Lead to Brain Shrinkage

(NaturalNews) For muscle heads, diets high in protein may be just what the doctor ordered, but a growing bicep may come with a cost: a shrinking brain.

According to a recent study published in the journal Molecular Neurodegeneration, when compared to three other diets, high protein diets were the ones that caused the most significant drop-off in brain weight.

Alzheimer's disease researchers are well aware of the wealth of studies linking diet to brain health. The Mediterranean diet, for example, is touted as one of the best diets to follow not only for great physical health, but for great mental health as well, according to findings published in a December 2006 issue of the Archives of Neurology.

With this in mind, researchers put four specific diets to the test to see how, or if, they contributed to the formation of amyloid proteins in the brain. Amyloid protein formation is one of the precursors to Alzheimer's disease. Read more...

A brief Introduction to Kinesiology

In general, kinesiology detects disbalances existing in the energetic field and re-harmonizes them. Kinesiology is characterized by a respectful co-operation and mutual elaboration of objectives on a partnership basis. It is also characterized by the basic idea that the key to resolving an imbalance and the potential for changing are to be found in the clients themselves.

Emotional problems or physical discomfort will reveal themselves in an energetic imbalance. In order to gain access to this imbalance, kinesiology deploys the muscle test which connects us to the subconscious.

The muscle test enables us to gain information, deriving from the client’s energetic system, on stressors as well as on how these may be reduced or triggered. When performing the muscle test, any given one of the client’s muscles is caused to contract and subsequently pressed by the therapist without applying much power. Muscles which are sufficiently supplied with energy can easily withstand the pressure applied in a muscle test. However, tested muscles that slacken and cannot be held in position indicate the response of a stressor which causes an imbalance of the energetic system. Read more...

Natural substance in breast milk destroys cancer cells

Breast milk is documented to be the best food possible for infants and breastfeeding is known to have enormous health benefits for moms, too. It turns out, however, that breast milk has even more amazing properties. Swedish researchers have found that it contains a compound that kills cancer cells in humans. The substance, dubbed HAMLET (which stands for Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells), is comprised of a protein and a fatty acid. Although found naturally in breast milk, scientists are not sure if HAMLET develops spontaneously or if it requires interaction with the acidic digestive system of a newborn.

HAMLET was first discovered by chance several years ago by researchers who were investigating the antibacterial properties of breast milk. Scientists soon began testing it on cancer cells and the findings were nothing short of astounding.

For example, studies in the lab showed that HAMLET was able to kill 40 different types of cancer cells. What's more, in animal studies the natural substance was found to be effective in killing one of the most deadly types of brain cancers -- glioblastoma. Read more...

Teenage girls live on junk food

Teenage girls eat substantially worse than teenage boys and older women, according to the preliminary results of the United Kingdom's National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

The average teenage girl consumed 54 grams (1.9 ounces) of French fries or other fried potatoes per day, in comparison with only 40 grams per day among women between the ages of 19 and 65. Teenage girls consumed 14 grams of potato chips and other salty snacks each day, 22 grams of chocolate and candy, and 37 grams of cakes and cookies. In contrast, adult women consumed only 6 grams, 10 grams and 27 grams of these foods per day, respectively.

Teenage girls were getting an average of 13.1 percent of their daily calories from saturated fat, higher than both the percentage in boys (12.7 percent) and the recommended daily maximum (11 percent). When it came to sugar consumption, girls performed marginally better than boys but were still above the daily maximum, acquiring 15 percent of their daily calories from sugar. Read more...

Sexual, Urinary Health Boosted in Exercisers, Nonsmokers

(HealthDay News) -- For people who need more reasons to start exercising and steer clear of smoking, new research finds that moving around and rejecting cigarettes can improve urinary health in women and sexual health in men.

In one study, researchers surveyed more than 2,000 Finnish women, aged 18 to 79, about smoking and their urinary health.

After the investigators adjusted the statistics so they wouldn't be thrown off by factors such as medication use and lifestyle, the researchers found that former and current smokers were 1.8 to 2.7 times more likely to need to urinate urgently, and 1.7 to 3.0 times more likely to need to urinate more frequently compared to those who never smoked.

In another study, researchers examined surveys taken by 178 healthy men at a VA medical center in North Carolina.Male penis enhancement

Doctors are addicted to "every drug under the sun"

Doctors suffer in secret from a wide range of physical and mental health problems including addiction, according to the findings of a new health program in the United Kingdom.

The Practitioner Health Program (PHP) was set up in response to concerns that health professionals were self-medicating or avoiding treatment for serious health problems, out of fear of being stigmatized if they visited a colleague for help. The program provides confidential health services, and so far has been judged a success.

"From the number of patients accessing PHP during its first year, it's clear there is a need for this highly specialized service," said England's chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson.

"This has been a real eye-opener," said PHP medical director Clare Gerada. "I thought at first we'd see a bit of stress and burn-out. But it soon became apparent how troubled some of these doctors and dentists were. I've been surprised at the degree and extent of substance misuse that we've seen."

Of 184 patients treated in the program's first year, 36 percent suffered from some form of addiction. Read more...

Prescription drug abuse exceeds heroin, cocaine and ecstasy combined

Rates of prescription drug abuse worldwide are higher than those for the use of cocaine, ecstasy and heroin, combined, according to a new report by the United Nations' International Narcotics Control Boards (INCB).

"Abuse of such drugs has been spreading over the world in recent years," said report co-author Hamid Ghodse of St. George's University in London. "It needs to be tackled urgently."

Ghodse said that prescription drug abuse is a "hidden problem," and it is difficult for authorities to get comprehensive data on the scale of the abuse. Recent high-profile celebrity deaths from prescription drug abuse, such as that of Michael Jackson, have brought more attention to the issue, however.

Taking a mid-day nap boosts brain power

Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found that people who take naps during the day are helping to improve their overall brain function. Following the nap, all were given a repeat exam and, this time, the group that napped performed better than the group that stayed awake. Read more...

They noted that light cannabis use could possibly prove to be even more damaging because cannabis smokers usually inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers.

"The smoking of three to four cannabis cigarettes a day is associated with the same degree of damage to bronchial mucus membranes as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day," the researchers noted in a news release from the university. Read more...
