(HealthDay News) -- Babies born with low blood pH in their umbilical cord appear to bear a higher risk for infant death, brain damage and/or childhood cerebral palsy, a review of prior research reveals.
The finding, reported online May 14 in BMJ, stems from an analysis conducted by researchers out of Birmingham Women's Hospital in England.
The authors note that when a baby is deprived of adequate oxygen during delivery -- a condition known as hypoxia -- umbilical cord blood pH drops. (Since normal blood pH indicates that the blood's acid and alkaline gases are balanced, a decrease in pH means the umbilical cord blood is becoming too acidic.)
Although hypoxia is the most common cause of brain damage, particularly among premature and very small babies, researchers previously had not established a clear association between low umbilical cord blood pH and related health complications. Read more...

The Hepatitis Virus A-B-C Explained
Hepatitis A
One of the mildest categories of hepatitis, hepatitis A is usually contracted from food or drink which has been contaminated. The condition has an incubation period of between two and six weeks and symptoms will take the form of a flu like illness along with tiredness and a jaundiced yellow appearance to the skin. The majority of individuals who contract hepatitis will recover without requiring any specific treatments however, adults with the condition should avoid alcohol consumption along with the oral contraceptive pill until such time as your blood tests provide the evidence that your liver has returned to normal levels. Thankfully, the virus is a relatively rare condition thanks to vaccinations. If you're looking to travel to any high-risk area you should first consult your doctor who may be able to administer the vaccine. When you are travelling to foreign lands insure that you wash fruit and salad leaves in boiled or bottled water. Read more...

Antidepressants During Pregnancy Cause Premature Birth
Women who take strategic serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=40&sid=7a2fbe0a7df565838330057730693eb3) during pregnancy are twice as likely to give birth prematurely as women who do not take the drugs, according to a study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and funded by the Danish Medical Research Council.
Many of the most popular depressants are SSRIs, such as Prozac (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=2491&start=0).
Researchers compared rates of premature birth between different women receiving prenatal care at the same hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. They compared women who were depressed and taking SSRIs with those who were depressed and not on any drugs, as well as those who did not suffer from depression (http://www.dreddyclinic.com/findinformation/dd/depression.htm).
Women who took SSRIs while pregnant were two times as likely to give premature birth as those who did not take the drugs. On average, they gave birth four to five days earlier (relative to their due dates) than women who did not take the drugs. Read more...

Baking soda can clean your teeth, clear your complexion
(NaturalNews) Many components of the modern western diet – meats, fish, dairy products, most grains, sugars, alcohol and caffeinated drinks (in fact, almost everything except vegetables, millet, most fruits and, as we have just seen, apple cider vinegar) – contribute to one's body becoming too acidic. This in turn can open the door to a variety of problems, some of them (including arthritic complaints) potentially serious if this acidic condition persists for many years.
This is because your body will attempt to compensate by retaining alkaline salts in the bloodstream to offset the increase of tissue acidity. Since your body can only tolerate a small imbalance in blood pH (the acid-alkali balance), it will rob alkaline components from other places – including your body's precious alkaline reserves – in an effort to restore proper pH equilibrium. This can result in heartburn, digestive distress, stomach upset, fatigue and a multitude of other symptoms. Simple, inexpensive kitchen baking soda can fix this. Read more...

FDA Knew Problems At Vaccine Plant Were Pervasive
FDA Knew Problems at Vaccine Plant Were Pervasive, Documents Show
BY MIKE MCGRAW
Knight Ridder Newspapers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (KRT) - American regulators knew five years ago that contamination at the now-infamous vaccine plant in Liverpool, England, was both pervasive and persistent, documents show.
In fact, evidence was so overwhelming that regulators should have shut down the plant or sought alternative flu vaccine sources long ago, say some vaccine and pharmaceutical experts who have reviewed the documents.
Instead, the United States has lost 48 million doses of flu vaccine - half its supply - after British regulators found more contamination and suspended the plant's license last month.
Documents obtained by The Kansas City Star show the Food and Drug Administration five years ago noted that the plant, then owned by the British firm Medeva, had failed to correct longstanding problems. But the agency continued to allow the plant to supply the U.S. market despite clear departures from what the agency calls "Good Manufacturing Practices." Read more...
