Campaign Offers Easy Steps to Cutting Diabetes Risk

(HealthDay News) -- Experts at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) are launching a new national prevention program to help people lower their risk for obesity-linked type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

CheckUp America will educate Americans on curbing risk factors such as overweight/obesity, high blood glucose, high LDL ("bad") cholesterol, high triglycerides, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and physical inactivity.

The more of these risk factors a person has, the greater their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

A recent ADA survey found that one in five Americans age 40 and older consider important health-related lifestyle changes "too hard," which suggests that many don't realize that relatively easy changes can help reduce their risk for diabetes and heart disease.

"The alarming rise in conditions like obesity, high blood glucose, and high blood pressure in America demands greater efforts to educate both people and physicians about the risk factors for type 2 diabetes and heart disease," Dr. John Buse, president-elect, medicine and science, ADA, said in a prepared statement. Pool chemicals linked to disease

A recent study out of the University of Illinois (U of I) links pool disinfectant chemicals with diseases like asthma and bladder cancer. According to researchers, pool chemicals react with organic matter in the water to form various toxic bonds that can lead to serious health problems.

"All sources of water possess organic matter that comes from decaying leaves, microbes and other dead life forms. In addition to organic matter and disinfectants, pool waters contain sweat, hair, skin, urine, and consumer products such as cosmetics and sunscreens from swimmers," explained Michael Plewa, a professor of genetics at U of I.

Unlike drinking water, which is exposed to disinfectants once before reaching the public, pool water is exposed to a continuous stream of disinfectants that mix and match with various other chemicals and compounds to form an unknown number of potentially dangerous chemical bonds.

According to researchers, these bonds can cause gene mutation, birth defects, respiratory problems, accelerated aging and even cancer. Read more...

How Cranberries Protect Your Teeth From Cavities

About this time last year, I told you about cranberry juice being used to successfully treat tooth decay and cavities. The same researchers have returned with new information that describes how cranberries work to protect your teeth from damaging bacteria, not unlike a natural form of Teflon.

Scientists coated a synthetic material resembling tooth enamel with cranberry juice, then applied bacteria, plaque or glucan that causes cavities. After seven months of research, scientists found cranberry juice protected teeth about 80 percent of the time.

Thankfully, even the lead research warned against heading for the grocery store in search of cranberry juice for two important reasons:

The fructose added to most processed cranberry juice is the primary culprit of cavities and a huge contributor to disease.
The natural acidity of cranberries strips essential minerals from your teeth. Read more...

Curcumin and black pepper combine to stop breast cancer tumor cells

Natural chemicals found in the spices turmeric and black pepper appear to stop the growth of breast tumors, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center and published in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

Researchers applied a solution containing both curcumin, found in turmeric, and piperine, which makes black pepper spicy, to breast cancer cells in a laboratory, using concentrations 20 times higher than those found in the human diet. They found that the solution hampered the ability of stem cells to propagate but did not affect the differentiation of normal breast cells.

"This shows that these compounds are not toxic to normal breast tissue," lead author Madhuri Kakarala said. Read more...

Raw Food--One of Your Keys to Outstanding Health

By Wes Petereson

A kitchen is nothing else than a chemical laboratory producing millions of completely new chemical substances that basically never existed in the wild and if, then very occasionally by accident. Cooking will randomly produce millions of different sugar and protein combinations commonly called Maillard molecules.

Throughout the biggest part of our evolutionary history, the one before processing, human beings have never ingested the amount of Maillard molecules we ingest today. The recent introduction of dairy products and grains has equally brought new chemical substances such as new proteins into the dietary spectrum of humans within a very short period of time.

Key Points Regarding the Effects of Cooking on Food and Health

The food's life force is greatly depleted or destroyed when it is cooked. The bioelectrical energy field is altered and greatly depleted, as is graphically demonstrated with kirlian photography. Live and bioactive raw food is severely diminished. Read more...
