Prescription drug addicts hit up emergency rooms for their next fix

Prescription drug abuse is out of control across the nation. Powerful opiate painkillers like OxyContin (odycodone) and Vicodin (not allowed bitartrate and acetaminophen) are replacing street drugs as addicts' drugs of choice, and these substances are causing increasing amounts of accident-related injuries and deaths. And according to a recent ABC News piece, prescription drug addicts are now abusing emergency rooms to get their fix.

According to statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of people who visit ERs to get narcotic pain medications for non-medical reasons more than doubled between 2004 and 2008. And physicians in the ER often have no qualms about handing out addictive drugs like Adderall because they typically have little time to verify whether or not patients are in legitimate need. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in the United States. It is also the most preventable cancer through early detection and proper diet. Colon cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected in its earliest (non-cancerous) stages. Non-cancerous polyps can be detected and easily removed via a colonoscopy many years before they might morph into cancer. The latest tool in the fight against colon cancer is the highly sensitive, stool screening method called iFOB (immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood) tests. This new test can detect even a very tiny amount of blood leakage from adenomas polyps, villous adenomas, and dysplastic polyps, thus detecting lesions in the colon before they become cancer.
Medical studies reveal that traditional stool guaiac (hemocult) tests commonly performed by physicians are not sensitive enough to detect very small amounts of blood in the stool and, therefore, are no longer recommended. Colonoscopies are somewhat invasive and only indicated once every 10 years for people over 50. As a result, there are many missed opportunities for early detection and prevention. iFOB tests are sensitive to even minute amounts of blood in the stool and much more accurate than traditional tests. Monarch butterflies use medicinal plants to treat diseases in their offspring

What happens when animals get sick in the wild -- do they just fight off disease by themselves? It seems they may actively treat themselves, and their sick offspring, with natural therapies. If that sounds like a far-fetched idea, listen up. Although few studies have been conducted on self-medication by animals, researchers from Emory University in Atlanta theorize the practice may be far more widespread than humans have realized. In fact, they've just discovered that monarch butterflies use medicinal plants to treat their offspring for disease.

"We have shown that some species of milkweed, the larva's food plants, can reduce parasite infection in the monarchs," Jaap de Roode, the evolutionary biologist who led the study just published in the journal Ecology Letters, said in a statement to the media. "And we have also found that infected female butterflies prefer to lay their eggs on plants that will make their offspring less sick, suggesting that monarchs have evolved the ability to medicate their offspring. We believe that our experiments provide the best evidence to date that animals use medication." Read more...
